Studies have shown that testosterone levels typically decrease in men starting at age 30, dropping by approximately 1%-1.5% every year. This decline, in conjunction with increasing rates of obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and environmental factors, has resulted in over 40% of men over age 45 suffering from a clinical condition known as testosterone deficiency (may also be called low testosterone, hypogonadism, or low T). Testosterone deficiency is associated with a wide range of symptoms and medical conditions, such as erectile dysfunction, depression, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and more.
Under the care of a doctor, testosterone therapy can alleviate many of the problems linked to testosterone deficiency and lead to better overall health and quality of life. While some benefits are felt after only a few weeks of treatment, others may require several months or longer to reach their full effect.
Testosterone is a hormone that is primarily produced in men through the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis. The hypothalamus releases GnRH, which stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete FSH and LH. These two hormones then stimulate the testicles to synthesize testosterone. Testosterone therapy uses different medications to increase testosterone levels and is personalized based on the patient’s situation. Some medications work by replacing the testosterone normally produced by the body with exogenous testosterone administered through injections, creams, or troches. Other medications increase levels by targeting the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis to support production of more testosterone inside the body. Your doctor will review your biomarkers and medical history to determine the best treatment plan for you.
